Management of Colleges Athletic Programs Assignment

The executives of Colleges Athletic Programs - Assignment Example They should rapidly create time-the board abilities and frequently have minimal personal time. Understudy competitors likewise have 'a way of life that regularly includes living in a fishbowl-like environment,' reports Porter (2008) as the creator alludes to Ender and Wilkie (2000, p. 125). An issue that numerous schools and understudy competitors face is one where the athletic program pioneers, for example, a mentor or athletic chief, requests that the understudy skirt a class so as to go to rehearse. In any case, the class that is in struggle with training is additionally required. As it were, the understudy competitor gets himself/herself conflicted between missing a class or missing practice. It is an instance of games versus scholastics and it isn't one to be trifled with as the school sports become progressively well known, all the more engaging, more sought after, and increasingly marketed. There is a negative effect of school sports on advanced education. Be that as it may, this isn't new. Splitt (2007) refers to the Chicago Tribune: [College football] is definitely not an understudy's down as it once might have been. It is an exceptionally sorted out business undertaking. The competitors who partake in it have come up through long periods of preparing; they are instructed by proficient mentors; pretty much nothing if any activity of common play is left to the player. The extraordinary matches are profoundly beneficial ventures. Once in a while the benefits go to back school sports, now and then to pay the expense of the games amphitheater; at times the school specialists take a cut for school structures. The American culture places sports at its center, particularly intercollegiate games. Splitt (2007) alludes to her article, Sports America 2005 when she reports that, It appears that just in sports-fixated and apparently smug America would we be able to locate an overall population that perspectives sports as too cool while the investigation of science, innovation, building, and arithmetic (STEMs) are viewed as geeky, and where competitors have a distinct edge with regards to school confirmation and maintenance - frequently in certificate plant like elective training programs with flawed accreditation. The writer analyzes the way of life of the United States to that of China. The nation centers around training, especially designing instruction. Enormous ventures are made so as to Last Name 3 construct schools and to improve college frameworks. Learning English is another top need as the Chinese need to get familiar with the language that is utilized in worldwide business. American universities and instructive foundations are being relinquished for the continually developing and all-expending brute called corporate greed. Unreasonable commercialization has brought scholastic debasement, budgetary trickeries, expanding consumptions on games, and cash centered presidents who regularly see sports programs as a financial need and undergrad instruction as a costly aggravation and who have little tolerance with change endeavors by their personnel, states Splitt (2007). School sports, for a long time currently, have been an objective for outrages and plugs. Sack (1998, p.B7) in his article, Big-Time Athletics versus Scholarly Values: It's a Rout alludes to his years playing for the University of Notre Dame in the 1960's. Despite the fact that sports were at that point being exceptionally marketed, colleges despite everything saw the significance of understudy competitors

9 Success Tips for Dating a Single Mom

9 Success Tips for Dating a Single Mom More in Relationships Spouses & Partners Marital Problems LGBTQ Violence and Abuse So youve got your eye on a  ?single mom. Shes smart, strong, and beautiful, but also a bit of a mystery. How can you make this relationship work? And how do you let her know that youre not just playing gamesâ€"without getting overly involved too soon? Before you start dating a single mom or explore taking this relationship to the next level, set the stage for success with these 9  tips. Recognize That Dating a Single Mom Is Different Her time is limited, and much of her energy goes toward taking care of her kids. But she’s also much more clear about what she wants in life, and thats an attractive quality! Accept That Her Top Priority Will Always Be Her Children In other relationships, you may have been able to gauge a woman’s feelings for you by how much time and energy she put into your relationship. When you’re dating a single mom, this isn’t necessarily the case. She may not have the time to see you as often as she’d like, and it’s not always as simple as hiring a sitter to go out. Instead of taking the limits on her time as a slight, learn to look for other expressions of her feelings for you. Let Your Girlfriend Discipline Her Own Children When you’re dating a single mom, let her handle 100% of the kids’ discipline. The only exception to this rule is if she specifically asks for your support or help. If you have concerns about the kids’ behavior, talk with your girlfriend about it privately. Never attempt to handle the issue yourself without discussing it with her first. Stay Clear of Any Drama With Her Ex If there’s tension with her ex, let your girlfriend handle it. Shes been doing a pretty good job up to this point! Of course, you can support her and encourage her, but don’t contact her ex on her behalf or get involved in an ongoing court battle over their custody agreement. Pace Yourself It’s important to give your relationship time to develop. Don’t rush into moving in together or getting engaged. Instead, take it slow and focus on developing trust before you take your relationship to the next level. Offer Emotional Support As a single mom, there is a tremendous amount of pressure on your girlfriend to provide for her children financially and emotionally. Be the kind of boyfriend who can listen to the things she’s going through without trying to “solve” every problem for her. She’s strong, and she will work it out in time. Offering support and encouragement along the way will help you build a stronger bond together. Practicing Active Listening in Your Daily Conversations Be Trustworthy As a single mother, your girlfriend may have experienced situations previously where she depended on someone who was not trustworthy. Set yourself apart by being someone she can trust. Be responsible to her without being responsible for her. Allow Your Relationship With Her Kids to Develop Naturally Don’t try to be too much too soon to either your girlfriend or her children. If you’re not sure about how involved you want to be with the kids, be open and honest about that. Talking about it can ease both of your concerns. At the same time, it’s important for both your girlfriend and her children that you don’t begin to take on a role that you can’t maintain for the long haul. A Word From Verywell You’re the only one who can know whether dating a single mom is right for you. Don’t get caught up in listening to family members or friends who will try to discourage you or suggest that she’s just looking for a father figure. This is rarely the case. Pay attention, instead, to the woman you know and the relationship you’re building together.

African American And Post Colonial Criticism - 1341 Words

Leah Vaidya Professor Rothenberg ENLS 2000 29 October 2017 African American and Post-Colonial Criticism The discussion of African American theory must begin with the discussion of the exclusion of African American history and literature in education in order to maintain what Tyson calls â€Å"the cultural hegemony†, which is the prominence and control of white people in America. The reason why they are not included is because, as Tyson says, the inclusion of African American writings and history upsets the racist stereotypes presented about African American people. A large part of these stereotypes rest on an idea called racialism—which asserts racist ideals based on moral, intellectual, and physical differences that have biological origins.†¦show more content†¦The first is the fact that everyday racism is experienced by people of color so frequently that it has become the norm. This can include everything from micro aggressions to the denial of the existence of racism by white people in America. The second is interes t convergence which refers to the fact that racism often ‘converges’ with other interests of capitalist America. The third is the social construct of race which addresses that ‘race’ is an idea that must be defined. This idea is complicated even more by the fact that sometimes once nonwhite groups are now considered white. This fact, while complicating the definition of race, reveals that race is just a social construct that reflects societies ideas about it at a specific time. Another example of this is seen in the census, in which people for many years have not been able to choose more than one race. The fourth is differential racialization which means that dominant group treats different minorities in different ways at different times. Based on the â€Å"needs of white society†, various groups can be stereotyped as good or bad. The fifth tenet is intersectionality which refers to the fact that race is not isolated, but intersects with class, sex, gender identity, etc. The final tenet is the voice of color positions which asserts that people of color are better to speak about race and racism because they experience it first had. These six tenets serve as a spring board to discuss many other ideasShow MoreRelatedEssay on Colonial Oppression of Women1123 Words   |  5 PagesColonial and Postcolonial debates along with the issues of Feminism have always been challenging discourses. Revenue Recognition Free Essays

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are general guidelines, which instruct firms on how to form their financial statements and how to accurately measure their profit levels. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) forms a conceptual framework that defines the nature and purpose of accounting and provides a theoretical framework regarding the manner in which transactions should be treated. The principles governing accounting procedures, however, may be amended or changed over time, and this may mean that new rules are devised regarding how transactions should be measured, reported, and presented to users (Hodgdon et al, 2009). We will write a custom essay sample on Revenue Recognition or any similar topic only for you Order Now There should be consistency in the principles used for accounting purposes to promote reliability in financial statements and ensure that all transactions are treated equally by all firms, otherwise there are high chances of financial statements being inaccurate (Wustemann Kierzek, 2005). The essay will describe the principles of revenue recognition, the difference between â€Å"income† and â€Å"revenue†, measurement issues between historical cost and value, matching of revenue and expenses, and the differences between the previous conceptual framework and the amendments made in the new revenue recognition model. The essay will conclude with a summary of the main points made in the answer and an analysis of whether the new proposed model has caused concern to respondents. The principles of accounting form a framework that enables users to properly understand the data included in financial statements and make it useful. It enhances the relevancy of the information, makes it free from error, neutral, and comparable to the financial statements of other firms. One of the current issues prevailing in accounting standards includes the issue of the principles of revenue recognition. (Schipper et al, 2009). iAS 18 and New Proposals Made: There are two main revenue recognition standards which incude iAS 18Revenue and iAS 11 Construction Contracts. However, the main problem with these revenue recognition models is that they may be difficult to comprehend and their application may also be a hassle. Moreover, iAS 18 does not thoroughly provide guidance on the topic of revenue recognition arrangements which have multiple elements. The iASB has decided to revise the accounting standard on revenue recognition as inconsistencies and weaknesses exist in the standard. The proposals for improvement in iAS 18 include removing inconsistencies and weaknesses in the existing revenue recognition framework, improving the standard of comparability of revenue recognition practices across industries, disclosing more vital information in financial statements, and the simplification of the preparation of financial statements. One of the main important distinctions made in the revenue recognition model is the distinction between â€Å"income† and â€Å"revenue†. Income is defined as the economic benefits that a firm may generate in the course of an accounting period which include an increase in the inflows or the value of assets or the decrease liabilities that in turn increases equity. This does not include the additional contributions made by existing and new equity holders. However, revenue is defined as the income that arises in the course of ordinary activities of an entity such as the sale of goods etc. The prevailing issue in accounting standards is when to recognize revenue and how to measure it reliably. According to the new accounting standard, revenue is recognized through the selling goods, the provision of services, and third party’s using the entity’s assets which results in yielding interest, royalties, and dividends. Another major issue in the revenue recognition model is how to measure assets or liabilities and whether to measure them at cost price or at value. Using the cost method may be considered reliable as the cost is known, yet the problem arising in the use of cost is that it relies on past figures (Cairns, 2006).Using the value method may be considered more useful or reliable as it uses up-to-date information but may not always be accurate as the current value of assets or liabilites may vary in measurement from firm to firm (Cairns, 2006). According to IAS 18 (Olsen Weirich, 2010) revenue shall be measured at fair value which is the amount at which an asset or liability can be settled between two knowledgeable willing parties in a transaction conducted at arm’s length. There are various conditions which result in the recognition of sales, such as when the entity has transferred to the buyer the significant risks and rewards associated with the ownership rights of the goods, the entity holds no managerial or controlling rights over the goods sold, the revenue generated and calculated from the sales can be measured reliably, the entity will benefit from the economic benefits of the transaction, and the costs incurred with respect to the transaction can be reliably calculated (Olsen Weirich, 2010). Problems with Proposed Standard: The costs associated with each of the transactions must be matched to the revenue generated and these costs are categorized as expenses. Each sale results in the occurrence of an expense which must be recognized in coordination with the revenue generated and put in its respective category in order to ensure the balancing of the income statement. However, the new proposed standard has given rise to significant feedback from users which includes the suggestion that while the recognition of revenue generated through selling goods, includes the transfer of control or an assessment of whether risks and rewards have been transferred, it should also include a collectability clause (Olsen Weirich, 2010). However, other respondents have asked â€Å"transfer of control† to be particularly defined before it is included in the model (Wagenhofer, 2013). While the new revenue recognition model provides a detailed basis for accounting standards and has defined a wide scope for the proper classification of transactions, the feedback received has suggested that the model is too complex and confusing for immediate implementation as it is inconsistent with previous frameworks and would require practice and getting used to in implementation. Moreover, other users have also mentioned that the model requires additional information regarding the meaning of certain rules and terms in order to be accurately implemented and used within all firms such as the meaning of â€Å"collaborator†. It is suggested that the Board review the new accounting principles that it has introduced and provide detailed explanations and examples of how to appropriately apply the standards to financial statements. It is also highly suggested that in order to improve the applicability of the new revenue recognition model, the inconsistencies between the previous model and the new model must be removed, the terms used in the new model must be clarified, and the suggested additions may be made. The Seventeenth Century Lyric Poems, Such As Robert Herricks Cavalier

The seventeenth century lyric poems, such as Robert Herrick's Cavalier poem "Counsel to Girls," and Andrew Marvell's metaphysical poem "To His Coy Mistress" are similar in many ways; yet also contrast in some aspects. These poems of love and life can be summarized in the quote, "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still afyling..." from "Counsel to Girls." This quote embodies the theme of Carpe Diem shared in these poems. Robert Herrick's "Counsel to Girls" is a Cavalier poem written in the seventeenth century. In the poem, the speaker is an elderly person with life experience. The speaker is talking to a younger woman about life and love. The speaker tells the younger person to enjoy life while she can, because it will go away. In this lyric poem, several instances of personification are used, such as the "Lamp of Heaven." The lamp, or sun, is personified as life. The poet uses the sun's positions to represent phases of life. Sun rise is youth and sun set is death, which is coming quickly. The overall theme of this poem is Carpe Diem. Andrew Marvell's "To His Coy Mistress" is a passionate metaphysical poem. Marvell, the speaker is attempting to get a young woman to stop being coy. He tries to get her to love him and personifies their love growing like vegetables. Marvell also personifies time when he says that time slowly eats away love. He wants her to seize the day and love him in return. Both poems are similar and unlike in many aspects. Both have similar Carpe Diem themes. Both poems also deal with a form of unrequited love. Also, the two poems share the same genre as lyric poems. The lyric poems also stress the value of youth. The quote, "Time's winged chariot hurrying near..." from "To His Coy Mistress" means that time cannot last forever, that the subject should enjoy her youth and seize the day. From "Counsel to Girls," the quote, "Tomorrow will be dying," is the same overall idea that Marvell uses in "To His Coy Mistress." Although similar in some ways, the poems also contrast in several ways. The tone in "To His Coy Mistress" is much more urgent than the light-hearted tone of "Counsel to Girls." Both of these poems use different speakers also. Marvell uses himself in his metaphysical poem, but in most Cavalier poems the speakers are often a person with experience in life and the obstacles of love. Although very similar in many ways, there is still a fine line between Cavalier and metaphysical poetry.

Velvet Ant Facts

Velvet Ant Facts Velvet ants are part of class Insecta and are found worldwide. They get their name from the bright, fuzzy fur on their bodies. For example, Dasymutilla occidentalis (red velvet ant) is derived from the Greek root word meaning shaggy (dasy). Fast Facts: Velvet Ants Scientific Name: MutillidaeCommon Names: Velvet AntOrder: HymenopteraBasic Animal Group: InvertebrateDistinguishing Characteristics: Black or brown bodies with bright red or orange velvety hairSize: 0.25-0.8 inchesDiet: Bumblebee larvae, nectarHabitat: Desert, meadows, fields, forest edgesConservation Status: Not assessedFun Fact: Red velvet ants are often called cow killers because their stings were said to be powerful enough to kill a cow. Description Velvet ants are wasps that get their name from the velvety fur on their bodies and are not very aggressive. Females do not have wings and walk along the ground for food, while the males have transparent wings and look more like wasps. Females possess curved stingers that extend from the abdomen and can sting multiple times. In some species, such as cow killer ants, their stingers have venom. Although the venom is not particularly toxic, the sting will hurt. Males do not have stingers, but they do have pointed pseudo stingers. Additionally, velvet ants have hard exoskeletons, and their bodies consist of a thorax and abdomen, both of which have short hairs. These ants are between 0.25 and 0.8 inches in size, and they have six legs and antenna. Habitat and Distribution Velvet ants are found worldwide. Some, like the red velvet ant, are mainly found throughout the U.S., but especially in dry regions. They gravitate towards open areas like fields, meadows, and even lawns. However, because velvet ants are parasitic, they will appear wherever their host species, such as bumblebees and wasps, live. Diet and Behavior Velvet Ant searching for prey. Â  rkhphoto/iStock/Getty Images Adult velvet ants consume nectar and water from flowers like milkweed. They may also consume larvae and adult insects, such as flies and beetles. Young velvet ants eat the body of their host as well as its larvae or cocoons. Females are most often found scurrying along the ground looking for nests of host species, while males are found on flowers. Velvet ants are relatively solitary creatures and are most active at dusk/night. These wasps are not normally aggressive and will not sting unless aggravated. Males and females can make squeaking sounds by rubbing abdominal segments against each other as a warning sign or when trapped. As parasites, they attack bumblebee nests, other kinds of wasp nests, and even fly and beetle nests to implant their eggs into them. While females spend most of their time searching for any sign of nests, males are usually spotted flying above the ground in search of a mate. Reproduction and Offspring Males fly close to the ground in search of potential mates and try to detect pheromones the females secrete. After mating, and to ensure the survival of her offspring, females search for and infiltrate ground nests of bumblebees and wasps to lay their eggs. Once a suitable host is located, the female lays her one to two eggs in the hosts larvae. She chooses larvae that have completed feeding and are ready for pupation by cutting through the cocoon and laying her eggs inside. The young will then grow and emerge from the host. The young eat their host, spend the winter in cocoons they spin within the case of the host, and emerge as adults in late spring. From the time they hatch, these young are on their own. One generation of velvet ants per female is likely produced each year. Species Velvet Ant. Â  fitopardo.com/Moment/Getty Images Insects in the family Mutillidae are considered velvet ants due to the similar salient features of the females- wingless and with velvety fur. About 8,000 species have been reported worldwide in the family Mutillidae, with 435 species located in the southern and western parts of North America. The most common species in this family is Dasymutilla occidentalis, which is known as the cow killer. Depending on the location, different species will have different sizes of males and females. In most species, the males are typically larger than the females, but six species found in Florida have similar sizes between males and females. Conservation Status Velvet ants have not been assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and are not considered pests because they rarely invade homes. Average SAT Scores What They Are and What They Mean

Average SAT Scores What They Are and What They Mean SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips When they first start tutoring, almost all students ask the same question: what is the average SAT score? The answer varies a bit every year, but for students in the class of 2013, the average SAT score was a 1497. I’ve created a chart by section below. Critical Reading Math Writing 497 513 487 However, the nationwide average doesn’t actuallymatter! What’s actually important is how your score compares to those of the other students applying to the same colleges and scholarships as you. You’ll need a much higher score to apply to very selective schools like Stanford or Princeton, buta 1500 is a totally acceptable score if you want to apply to smaller campuses of big state school systems. Let’s look at what an average SAT score really means and how it affects you. The National Average Doesn’t Matter - Really! Almosttwo million students take the SAT every year, and they go onto all kinds of different schools, fromIvy League universitiesto local community colleges. The national average includes all of these students'scores. But you're not competing against every single high schooler in the same year as you; you’re only competing against the students who are interested in the same schools and programs as you are. Theimportant thing is to have a score the same as or higher than the average among that group, and whether that average is above or below the national onewill depend entirely on the type of schools you’re interested in. How You Stack Up AgainstYour Peers We've established that the national average doesn't really mean much, but maybe you still want to know how you compare to other students in a general sense. In that case, you might want to look athow your SAT scores compare to those of other students like you, i.e. those with similar grades and backgrounds. To get a sense of how you fit in the range, you can look up at the average SAT score for students at your high school or for those with similar GPAs. Keep in mind, though, that when it comes to college applications, these numbers arealmost as irrelevant as the national one. Adorable dogs duking it out over SAT scores. Average SAT Score for Your High School To find the average SAT score for your school, you can try checking with counseling office ofsearching for â€Å"[your school] SAT scores† on the web. The second approach is more likely to work if you live in an area with high SAT adoption. If you live in an ACT mandatory state, it’s probably easier to find your school's ACT scores and convert them to SAT scores. However, remember that most colleges don’t compare you against your classmates. Though this information can be interesting it shouldn’t be a source of stress. Average SAT Score for High Achievers The average SAT scores for honors students are generally muchhigher than those for all US high schoolers. If you’re a top â…“ honor student, the average SAT score is 1810. If you’re a top 1/10 honor student, the average is 2000. If you’re not scoring that highly, don’t panic. Your personal score goal will still depend on the schools you want to apply to, and plentyof great schools admit mostly students withscores below 2000. The Key Number: The Average SAT Score for Your First-Choice College Ultimately, your SAT score is a tool to help you get into college, so what you really need to know is the average ACT score for students admitted to the school you want to attend. Generally speaking, very selective schools generally have average SAT around 2200, moderately selective schools have an average SAT score around 1800, and less selective schools have an average SAT score around 1550. However, you should look up the specific SAT score range for each school you're planning to apply to. To find this information, check the college’s admissions page or search forâ€Å"[college name] SAT score.† The schools usually list a range from the 25th to 75th percentile - you’ll want to shoot for the higher end of the range. Use the worksheet on this page to calculate your exact target score based on all the schools you’re interested in. What's Next? Hyperboloid Model Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Hyperboloid Model - Term Paper Example The paper’s aim is to comprehensively discuss the concept of the ‘Hyperboloid Model’, in relation to application in the field of Geometry and Mathematics in general. While focus will be placed more on the geometrical application, influences and effects of the model, the paper will also delve into other applications. Conclusively, it will portray the functional application of the model, essential in gaining required accuracy. Towards better understanding the vital importance of the hyperboloid model, there is need of a historical analysis of the concept, in terms of geometrical application. To be noted, as Alekseevskij, Vinberg and Solodovnikov (1993) portray, is that the study of prevailing relations amongst hyperbolic, spherical and Euclidean geometries historically dates back to the early 19th century. This was in an attempt at proving Euclid’s fifth postulate. Accordingly, it is towards ascertaining this that C. F. Gauss was able to subsequently discover, in the 1820s, the concept of hyperbolic geometry. Influential is that only a few years were to pass, before this form of geometry was to be independently re-discovered by both J. Bolyai (1832) and N. Lobacheviski (1829). Notable is that the concept’s founders were in agreement, in terms of providing its strongest evidence for its consistency. This was based upon the duality present, between spherical and hyperbolic trigonometries (Alek seevskij, Vinberg & Solodovnikov, 1993). Initially demonstrated by Lambert – in his [L1770] 1770 memoir – the duality aspect present between the two forms of trigonometries is vivid in a variety of theorems. Inclusive is the ‘law of sines’, which can be affirmed in a form that is applicable in hyperbolic, Euclidean and spherical geometries. Accordingly, it is towards proving the prevailing consistency of hyperbolic geometry that necessitated the building of diverse analytical models upon the Euclidean plane. This is perhaps the reason why Beltrami E.

Marketing - Essay Example The financial services sector would include banking, life assurance and pensions, investment management and asset servicing apart from general insurance, corporate finance, and broking services sectors. The factors that affect the financial services industry are the government regulation and deregulation from time to time, global competition, changing customer preference behavior. Availability of skilled staff is essential. Marketing financial services, irrespective whether it is face-to-face or through direct marketing channels, comes with a high cost. If human element is eliminated, the electronic set up costs is high. Marketing of services is a bigger challenge than marketing of products. Various reasons account for this and hence strategic marketing plans have to be devised for this. The most important differentiation is that products have well defined parameters and the customer can base his decision to some extent on that. Services on the other hand are intangible. In services marketing, it depends to a large extent on the customer. Two different people would react differently to a given situation. Marketing a product is on the premise that there is a market of millions. Hence, all related services like delivery, demonstration and after sales service can be built accordingly. As far as marketing financial services is concerned, each individual is a market in himself. Customer relationship management is essential here. Transactional analysis is important because it helps to derive customer knowledge to offer and improve the services. The service staff can also be trained based on this informati on. In marketing financial services, various factors have to be taken into account. Financial services come with a high element of risk attached to it. Marketing of products and general services require the four P’s (product, price, place and promotion) but in marketing of financial services two

The Exeter Book :: Old English Poetry Literature Essays

The Exeter Book The Exeter Book is the largest existing collection of Old English poetry. The manuscript was given to the library of Exeter Cathedral by its first bishop, Leofric, at the end of the tenth century. The book consists of 131 parchment leaves which measure approximately 12.5 by 8.6 inches. The most famous works contained in the Exeter Book include â€Å"The Wanderer,† â€Å"The Wife’s Lament,† â€Å"The Seafarer,† and â€Å"Wulf and Eadwacer.† In addition to the 31 major poems, 96 riddles are also included in the collection. The manuscript was likely copied by a single scribe in 975, though â€Å"The Wanderer† is though to date back to the Anglo-Saxon tribes’ conversion to Christianity in the sixth century. â€Å"The Wife’s Lament† may have pre-dated â€Å"The Wanderer† because â€Å"it offers none of the typical Christian consolation for her despair and appears to reflect a pre-conversion, pagan attitude tow ards ones’ fate† (The Exeter Book). Both poems are invaluable resources in their depiction of the precepts and roles of men and women in Anglo-Saxon society. â€Å"The Wanderer† is an elegy, or a lament for the dead and the glories of the past. The narrator of the poem has lost his kin in battle and is wandering alone and contemplating the temporal nature of life. It is clear that the narrator respects the comitatus, the bond of loyalty between a lord and his warriors, as is illustrated when he recalls â€Å"embracing and kissing his liege lord and laying his hands and his head on his knee† (Wanderer 101). The stoic attitude of the narrator is reflective of the Anglo-Saxon culture in which men were supposed to be brave and unemotional. Despite this convention, the narrator’s sorrow is strongly conveyed in the Ubi Sunt (‘Where are they?’) passage when he asks, â€Å"Where has the horse gone? Where the young warrior? Where is the giver of the treasure?† (Wanderer 101). The narrator’s lament also displays the permeating cultural belief that everything in life is predetermined by fate. This is seen when the narrator envisions the end of the world in everlasting winter when â€Å"all the earth’s kingdom is wretched [and] the world beneath the skies is changed by the work of the fates† (Wanderer 102). The poem ends with a strong reference to Christianity in the lines, â€Å"It will be well with him who seeks favor, comfort from the Father in heaven, where for us all stability resides† (Wanderer 102).

Animals and Birds Should Never Be Kept in Cages

â€Å"Animals and birds should never be kept in cages† A cage is defined as an enclosure used to confine or protect something. People nowadays keep animals in cages for entertainment and profit purposes. However, there are other reasons, such as the importance of preserving the species to ensure it does not go into extinction and giving people a chance to appreciate wildlife that is impossible to find in a modern city. Therefore, to a great extent I agree that animals and birds should be kept in cages. To begin with, caging animals and birds prevent them from going into extinction. By caging animals in enclosures that simulate their natural environments, these animals will not be vulnerable. They are allowed to roam around the space provided without their natural instinct to live in the â€Å"wild† being destroyed. By providing animals and birds food and proper medical care, their healths are taken care of. If we let the animals live in the wild untouched, they may be prone to contracting diseases. Not only that, they are more subjected to being hunted. Furthermore, animals are not evenly distributed around the world due to the differences in the habitats that they live in. These animals allow humans to appreciate wildlife more. Humans will be exposed to different types of species available including those that exist in natural abundance and those that are endangered. This increases their awareness about the wild. By portraying endangered species, humans may pay more attention to preserve them. This also helps to prevent animals from going into extinction. For instance, the White Tigers at the Singapore Zoological Garden are kept in enclosures that resemble their natural habitat. According to research, there are six subspecies of tigers left in the world and one of them is The White Tigers. On the flip side, some people may claim that caging the animals and birds is unethical as it deprives them of their freedom. However, I cannot agree to this statement. As I have stated, animals are kept in enclosures that are big enough for them to roam around. This does not deprive animals of their freedom. In conclusion, it is important to cage animals as it reaps benefits for both animals and humans. Indeed, it is my conviction that animals and birds should be kept in cages.

Criteria For An Effective Extensive Reading Program For...

Literature Review Criteria for an Effective Extensive Reading Program for English Learners Wesley Pulido California State University, San Bernardino Criteria for an Effective Extensive Reading Program for English Learners Introduction The term second-language acquisition (SLA) has multiple meanings. Generally, it describes learning a second language. It specifically names the theory of the manner in which second-language learners learn a second language. As Dà az-Rico (2013) has stated, second-language acquisition is â€Å"learning any language (whether third or twentieth) in school or in some other way after the first language† (p.6). Second-language acquisition can be compared to second- language learning. The latter of the†¦show more content†¦Alan Maley stated, Given the limited hours of instruction in most programs, students will never be exposed to enough vocabulary, enough times, to acquire the necessary quantum in classrooms alone. Out of class learning is the only way, and one of the most convenient and proven ways of doing so is through massive independent reading, entailing repeated encounters with vocabulary in context. (Maley, 2012, p. 308). Maley confirmed the important role of reading both inside and out of class in order to expose English Learners to as much vocabulary as possible through the use of literary texts. What Is Extensive Reading? Extensive Reading is a method to improve the reading ability of readers. When second-language learners read extensively, they independently use easy-readers to build their fluency rate. Moreover, readers learn to read by reading instead of through the direct instruction of the reading components such as comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. According to Carrell and Carson (1997), Extensive Reading has two characteristics. First, learners read numerous amounts of varied reading material. Second, the reading focuses on the meaning of the text as opposed to the language. It is important to distinguish the difference between Intensive Reading and Extensive Reading to fully understand the Extensive Reading approach. Language Barriers Free Essays

Language barriers can impede the educational progress of minorities. The United States is facing the challenge of language barriers in the way of educational progress of minorities. There are approximately 3. We will write a custom essay sample on Language Barriers or any similar topic only for you Order Now 5 million children who are not proficient in English language due to their different native language. The United States has received maximum number of new arrivals in 1960s. these arrivals included refugees, illegal and legal immigrants and migrants. As a result, number of enrolled students increased significantly and a large number of new comers were admitted in the public schools of the United States. These newly enrolled students were from different nations so they were proficient in their native languages but their proficiency level regarding English language was very low or none. There were not/hardly able to speak English. To overcome this challenge, several educational policies, and legislation and court decisions were made (Berman et al, 1992). The Bilingual Education Act of 1968, Title VII of the Elementary and Secondary Act was the first step that was taken to overcome the challenge of language barrier. The purpose of this Act was to make sure that all the Mexican American children learn to speak English to an extent that can enable them to actively participate in their educational activities. The role of this Act was later expanded to overcome the language barrier of all non-English speaking children. It is shown in Chavez, (1991, p. 11-12): â€Å"It is not the purpose of the bill to create pockets of different languages through the country †¦ but just to try to make those children fully literate in English†. Several steps were taken to overcome the language barrier. The purpose of all the steps was to enable all non-English speaking children to speak English fluently. An example of such as decision was made in Lau v. Nichols (1974) when the United States Supreme Court declared that every non-English speaking child has got the right to get special assistance in learning English. It stated: There is no equality of treatment merely by providing students with the same facilities, textbooks, teachers, and curriculum; for students who do not understand English are effectively foreclosed from any meaningful education. †¦ Teaching English to the students of Chinese ancestry who do not speak the language is one choice. Giving instruction to the group in Chinese is another. There may be others. (Chavez, 1991, pp. 14-15) A large number of Limited English Proficient students are enrolling in the 10th grade test. It was also found that the number of Hispanic high school graduates was very less all over the country. This was due to large number of students who were dropped out of the school. Although there have been several efforts to improve the English language of non-English speaking students specially Hispanic students but it is found that despite all these efforts, the drop out rate of Hispanic students has not decreased to a significant extent (Hispanic Dropout Project, 1998). Conclusion English language learners are usually exempted from appearing in the assessments that are done for native English speakers. It is quite unfair because non-English speaking students are left behind. It is suggested that non-English speakers should also be allowed to appear in the same assessment programs that are done for English speakers. This will help the non-English speakers to get out of the feeling of left out and they will progress a breast with native English speakers. Personal Development Planning GSM London Foundation

Question: a) Demonstrate ability to reflect on chosen subjects to highlight the skills acquired and emphasise how improvement in performance is being achieved. b) Exhibit motivation and confidence in engaging in personal and career development and planning. c) Demonstrate progressive learning through a series of agreed milestones. ? Answer: Personal Development Planning: Personal development planning is a planning that helps people to increase their skills, experience, and self-awareness. So this is a process that designed for them to make them aware of their abilities, make them think about their personal development. It helps people to make a plan to develop skills which they need in future for academic studies, and thus they can increase their career opportunities (Bath.ac.uk, 2015). As there is a term planning in PDP (personal development planning), so it cannot be a process of taking random decisions. First people need to make a plan for their future depending upon their abilities and skills then they have to set a goal for their life. After from that, they need to acquire relevant skills to accomplish their goal (Still, 2015). There are three important parts that are an important part of personal development planning: Using Social Media to create a Professional Brand: It is an important tool that is helpful for creating personal development program for students. It is all about building relationships between people to stay connected with other people. When a person shares her activities with other people, this helps others to get knowledge about activities and accomplishments. This may create chances for others to take a advantage of success which again make others more focused and stronger (Robinson, 2015). People become more accomplished if they allow this tool to make them aware of the unknown there and help them to overcome the fears. So a community or group on any social networking site helps people to expand their connection and creates opportunities and enables them to be more focused and organized. This increases their confidence that encourage them to take more risk in their lives. People get chances to stay connected with other strong people who inspire them (Nash, 2015). So a relatively weaker person gets benefits and becomes a stronger one. Connection with a business person is useful of making positive relationships with others; this also creates opportunities to them. When two persons who are more focused and confident, stay connected through social media then this is named as Master Minding. So by sharing activities and lessons people experienced as an employee or employer, they can inspire others and help them to gain knowledge. Many jobs sites help people to search jobs t hat are suitable for them, and at the same time it helps the employer to find a better employee in their organizations (Johnson, 2010). A job seeker who spends more time on the internet to get job notifications has more opportunities than a job seeker who spends his time in looking for jobs in a door-to-door basis (Cottrell, 2010). Computer literacy skills: This refers to the capability of operating and as well as use the programs with efficiency. A person who is well trained in computer programs often gets a good job in a good organization. Programs such as word processing, presentations, and spreadsheet help a person to arrange their thoughts in an organized manner. So if a person knows how to operate these programs can easily get good jobs in various institutions. A person is having knowledge of internet and can access it easily; can communicate with others people of her organizations. Various Financial institutions, banking institutions deal with different types of data regarding cost, revenue, etc. which are not easily manageable and analytics in those institutions could not handled those without any software. These data have many faults for which it does not give the proper estimation results to analytics. Therefore, they need software that automatically remove those faults and give proper estimation results after giving relevant commands in that software (Nash, 2015). Even if a person starts her career in the lower-division job, she can get promotions to higher level jobs after acquiring perfect knowledge about computer skills. A person having good knowledge in computer programs can get a leadership position in a renowned organization. This skill does not refer that one who wants to get a job needs not to be well known about everything in the computer. But some basic knowledge and some programs that are relevant and important for a persons job profile are needed. Basic computer knowledge enables a person to take classes in schools and colleges, but she needs to be trained in different programs to get a job. The computer is a medium through which people can communicate with others and can leave messages in mail accounts, Facebook accounts, etc. So computer literacy skills have become important as all institutions depend on computerized works (McKay, 2015). Importance of presentation skills on Personal Development Skills: It is common for many individuals that they all deliver their first presentations to a job interview. So they know the importance of a presentation. This skill is called learnt skill cause if a person works on this skill becomes confident enough to explain their thoughts through the presentation. The so good presentation leaves a good impression about that person that presents professional skill. So this skill helps a person to speak at large internal meetings. Many people possessed good knowledge about their subject as well as current situations in the market, but this is not sufficient to get a job. A person has to present herself in a suitable manner and make the employer understand about her acquired skills in an organized way. The duty of a person is to make the employer understand the importance of her presence in the organization (Cottrell, 2010). Many people are afraid of presenting herself which has an impact on their work. So people who are well presented and well behaved i n their organizations gets extra advantages. So to create good career opportunities, people must develop their presentation skills. A well presenter who is very good in speaking is appreciated by all. So knowledge is not the only thing that creates advantages and opportunities, it is the good presentation of people that matters most. So a superior quality product is not enough to gain profits, presentation of that product is needed the most. So there is a need for a leader who delivers clear messages, and it is necessary for a leader to promote his product. It is also true that better presentation is not sufficient to guarantee the success but this ensures chances of success (Wilson, 2014). Conclusions: GSM London Foundation helps students in developing their skills, and it focuses on students strength. They have introduced a Year 0 programme that improve students job prospect; it helps people to begin their degree course. People who have enough work experience but do not have enough academic knowledge get benefits from this program. So this program has effective outcomes in both long terms and short term. In the short run, people find it interesting and useful for their future. As GSM introduced innovative learning program that combines learning projects. Seminars, e-learning program, online revisions, audio and video recording of class lectures, practice classes that enable a person to be more efficient. They can get a degree in various subjects. It also has long run effects on the Personal Development Planning of the student. As it gives facilities to those who feel that, they are not able to get any degree after a certain age. Oliver Essays - English-language Films, British Films,

Oliver Twist And Anti Semism Charles Dickens being anti-Semitic when portraying the character Fagin as "the Jew", in his classic story Oliver Twist, or was he merely painting an accurate portrait of the 19th Century Jew in England? Some critics seem to believe so. Though there are no indications of neither anti-Semitic nor racist slurs throughout the story, Dickens' image turned out to follow the path of his time and place in history. The result is an enlightened picture of Victorian England's image of the Jew. The attitude towards Jews and Jewishness in 19th Century England demonstrates that Dickens was a man of his time. His attitude reflected the common British belief that Jews were villainous thieves. Fagin, a thief, is described by Dickens as "a very old shriveled Jew, whose villainous and repulsive face was obscured by a quantity of matted red hair"(Dickens 87). This common depiction of the Jew was accompanied by the stereotype that they had big noses and lured orphaned children into their filthy dens and turned them into derelicts. He was a thief because he did not have any skills, nor was he welcome anywhere. On the other hand, to describe Fagin in any other light would have to give the impression that Jews just might be humans after all. In reading this story, I discovered Fagin to be somewhat likeable and misunderstood. Though revolting to look at, having a repulsive disposition, and having manners and hygiene left to be desired I could not help but to feel sorry for the old guy. All he wanted to have was security in his old age. For example, when Fagin sees Oliver looking at him while admiring his treasures, Fagin asks the boy if he had seen any of his pretty things. Oliver tells him that he did. "Ah!" said the Jew, turning rather pale. "They- are mine, Oliver; my little property. All I have to live upon, in my old age. The folks call me a miser, my dear. Only a miser, that's all" (Dickens 1961: 91). I also found Fagin to be very charming in instances, almost likeable and having some redeeming qualities. Another example of Fagin's humanity is seen in the way he treats Oliver. Although Oliver plays a totally utilitarian role to Fagin, he becomes protective of him, even though the motives are purely selfish. When not being watched, Fagin has great self-control, even under duress. He is always cautioning Sikes against violence. There are some signs that Fagin still has a shade of humanity left in his perverted character. Several times throughout the story he exhibits some kindness towards Oliver. He checks his motives before he acts. Though the reader is still at bay with his actions, he still seems to have some sort of a conscience. It could be argued that Fagin and Oliver are somewhat similar. Though the reader does not see this at first, more in depth reading reveals that Oliver and Fagin mirror each other in who and what they are. Oliver, a boy without a home, Fagin, "The Jew", without a country. Fagin, in fact, is not seen as an Englishman. He is Jewish, which is a race all its own. Fagin is the outsider, unlike Oliver. His Jewishness places him at even more a disadvantage than Oliver's orphaned status. Both characters echo each other in asking for more; they are placed in oppositions so that for Oliver to claim his rightful place in society, Fagin must die. Dickens' stereotypical association of Fagin with a class of criminal perceived by him as almost invariably Jewish is based on a particular awareness of the commonly accepted wicked practices of this kind of Jew. Dickens' stereotypical association of Fagin with a class of criminal perceived by him as almost invariably Jewish is based on a particular awareness of the commonly accepted wicked practices of this kind of Jew. In Dickens and his Jewish Characters, Dickens answers a letter from a Jewess woman who wrote him concerned with the fact that Dickens may be in fact an anti-Semitic and wanted to allow Dickens to reply as to why the characterization of Fagin. His response was that "Fagin in Oliver Twist is a Jew because it unfortunately was true, of the time to which that story refers, that the class of criminal almost invariably was a Jew" (Dickens 1918:9). Critical reviews have been inclined to argue that Fagin is only a Jew in no more than name. "His main claim to Jewishness", contends critic Harry Stone, "is the fact that

The Nucleus - Definition, Structure, and Function

The Nucleus - Definition, Structure, and Function The cell nucleus is a membrane bound structure that contains the cells hereditary information and controls the cells growth and reproduction. It is the command center of a eukaryotic cell and is commonly the most prominent organelle in a cell. The Cell Nucleus You can think of the cell nucleus as a kind of command center containing all the chromosomal and genetic information needed for the reproduction of life. Distinguishing Characteristics The cell nucleus is bound by a double membrane called the nuclear envelope. This membrane separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm. Like the cell membrane, the nuclear envelope consists of phospholipids that form a lipid bilayer. The envelope helps to maintain the shape of the nucleus and assists in regulating the flow of molecules into and out of the nucleus through nuclear pores.  The nuclear envelope is connected with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in such a way that the internal compartment of the nuclear envelope is continuous with the lumen of the ER. The nucleus is the organelle which houses chromosomes. Chromosomes consist of DNA, which contains heredity information and instructions for cell growth, development, and reproduction. When a cell is resting i.e. not dividing, the chromosomes are organized into long entangled structures called chromatin and not into individual chromosomes as we typically think of them. Nucleoplasm Nucleoplasm is the gelatinous substance within the nuclear envelope. Also called karyoplasm, this semi-aqueous material  is similar to cytoplasm and is composed mainly of water with dissolved salts, enzymes, and organic molecules suspended within. The nucleolus and chromosomes are surrounded by nucleoplasm, which functions to cushion and protect the contents of the nucleus. Nucleoplasm also supports the nucleus by helping to maintain its shape. Additionally, nucleoplasm provides a medium by which materials, such as enzymes and nucleotides  (DNA and RNA subunits), can be transported throughout the nucleus. Substances are exchanged between the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm through nuclear pores. The Nucleolus Contained within the nucleus is a dense,  membrane-less structure composed of RNA and proteins called the nucleolus. The nucleolus contains nucleolar organizers, which are parts of chromosomes with the genes for ribosome synthesis on them. The nucleolus helps to synthesize ribosomes by transcribing and assembling ribosomal RNA  subunits. These subunits join together to form a ribosome during protein synthesis. Protein Synthesis The nucleus regulates the synthesis of proteins in the cytoplasm through the use of messenger RNA (mRNA). Messenger RNA is a transcribed DNA segment that serves as a template for protein production. It is produced in the nucleus and travels to the cytoplasm through the nuclear pores of the nuclear envelope. Once in the cytoplasm, ribosomes and another RNA molecule called transfer RNA work together to translate mRNA to produce proteins. Eukaryotic Cell Structures The cell nucleus is only one type of cell organelle. The following cell structures can also be found in a typical animal eukaryotic cell: Centrioles - help to organize the assembly of microtubules.Chromosomes - house cellular DNA.Cilia and Flagella - aid in cellular locomotion.Cell Membrane - protects the integrity of the interior of the cell.Endoplasmic Reticulum - synthesizes carbohydrates and lipids.Golgi Complex - manufactures, stores and ships certain cellular products.Lysosomes - digest cellular macromolecules.Mitochondria - provide energy for the cell.Ribosomes - responsible for protein production.Peroxisomes - detoxify alcohol, form bile acid, and use oxygen to break down fats.
